Accurate Imaging. Trustworthy Diagnosis. Professional Treatment
Pelvic Sonography: A Window to Women’s Health
Pelvic sonography, or pelvic ultrasound, is a safe diagnostic imaging study that employs high-frequency sound waves to visualize the organs and structures of the pelvis. It is a routine test that is suggested to assess reproductive and urinary function, particularly in women. Pelvic sonography is painless, harmless, and very informative and is a very important tool for early diagnosis, treatment planning, and continuous follow-up of most health conditions.
What is Pelvic Sonography?
Pelvic sonography is the process of using a small, portable instrument known as a transducer, which sends out sound waves that bounce off internal organs and tissues. The echoes are translated into real-time images on a monitor screen. The scan may be achieved in two manners:
- Transabdominal ultrasound: The transducer is pressed against the skin on the lower abdomen. It needs a full bladder for improved visualization.
- Transvaginal ultrasound: A specially designed probe is placed inside the vagina for a better and more view of the pelvic organs. It is not normally done with a full bladder.
Either or both may be ordered by a doctor depending on the clinical indication.
Why Is Pelvic Sonography Done?
Pelvic sonography is an ideal tool for evaluation of almost all types of gynecologic and urinary tract disorders. It is routinely suggested for:
- Investigate causes of pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
- Monitor ovarian follicles with fertility therapy
- Diagnose ovarian cysts, fibroids, or pelvic masses
- Evaluate uterine status such as endometrial thickness or abnormalities
- Detect the location of and growth of an intrauterine pregnancy
- Detect ectopic pregnancy (life-threatening)
- Scan the bladder and detect urinary retention or abnormalities
- Monitor IUD (intrauterine device) placement
- Aside from women’s reproductive well-being, pelvic ultrasound is done in men and children to evaluate the bladder, prostate, or pelvic masses.
Advantages of Pelvic Sonography
The following are the advantages of pelvic sonography:
- Non-invasive: No injection, shots, or cuts are required.
- No radiation: It is entirely safe for pregnant women.
- Easy and fast: The test itself will not exceed 30 minutes.
- Real-time images: It gives real-time images for emergencies.
- Universal availability: It is easily available and inexpensive, thus suitable for mass screening and emergency diagnosis.
Preparation and What to Expect
For a transabdominal ultrasound, you might be asked to drink water prior to the test so that your bladder is full and will assist with clearer picture. For a transvaginal ultrasound, you might be asked to empty your bladder prior to the scan. The test is painless, but you might feel some gentle pressure on the transvaginal scan.
Our radiologist subsequently reads the images after the test and sends a report to your referring doctor, who will call and explain the results.
When to Have a Pelvic Sonography?
If you have symptoms like:
- Irregular periods
- Pelvic or lower abdominal pain
- Painful sex
- Difficulty getting pregnant
Urinary frequency or urinary retention
…it’s time to consult a gynecologist or doctor who could prescribe a pelvic ultrasound for better diagnosis.
Final Words
Pelvic sonography is a cost-effective yet convenient diagnostic tool that helps in early detection of abnormalities and improves treatment outcomes. As a part of routine check-up procedure or as an inquiry for some symptom, it adds clarity and assurance to medical interventions. Have your scans taken by trained professionals at a well-recognized diagnostic center or clinic for the best outcome.
